Arboricultural Services and Tree Surveys to BS 5837

Our Approach

We work closely with our clients to fully understand their needs, whether they require technical advice on the management of their trees or whether our
tree survey expertise is required for their development projects. With both the constraints and opportunities in mind which come with the presence of trees on a site, we aim to develop the best possible and most sustainable technical design and management solutions, whilst continually working closely with the Local Planning Authority and other stakeholders.

We have strong experience in the delivery of services relating to British Standard 5837 for a wide range of residential, educational, infrastructure and commercial schemes. Our experience also covers Woodland Management Planning and we offer services relating to tree pest and disease management, tree work specifications, Tree Preservation Orders, and tree risk assessments.

Enzygo arboricultural services and can provide special advice on both trees in relation to development and tree management. Some of our services include:

Tree Surveys to BS 5837

At Enzygo we have more than 10 years’ experience in efficiently carrying out tree surveys (also known as arboricultural surveys) to BS 5837:2012 Trees in Relation to Design, Demolition and Construction for a variety of sites. The information collected during our site visits is compiled in concise reports, highlighting the potential constraints on the future use of the site. They also include preliminary recommendations both for the management of existing trees and any design for the development of the sites. We produce easy-to-read survey schedules and tree survey plans which help both our clients and Local Planning Authorities to understand both the opportunities and constraints posed by the trees on a site.

Arboricultural Impact Assessments

We are experienced in understanding proposed site layouts for all types of development projects and how they work in relation to existing trees on a site. We work closely with our clients’ design teams to help integrate good quality trees into any design and ensure the benefits of existing mature trees are fully exploited. We assess the final requirement for tree retention and tree removal and can provide full technical specifications for tree protection measures to BS 5837:2012. Our Arboricultural Impact Assessments and Arboricultural Method Statements are accompanied by clear Tree Removal and Tree Protection Plans which are used by our clients both to discharge Planning Conditions and for the construction stage of their project.

Quantified Tree Risk Assessments (QTRA)

We can offer our clients a well-structured assessment of the potential risk one or more of their trees may pose to both people and property. We are Registered Users of the Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) Methodology which looks at a number of factors such as the nature of the “target” and the “probability of failure” of a tree or part of a tree. This enables us to establish an overall “Risk of Harm” which in turn helps our clients to make a well-informed decision on whether and how the tree should be managed to minimise the risk. We can also help with the subsequent steps of writing tree work specifications and the procurement of tree surgery works (link to Tree Management Consultancy)

Tree Management Consultancy

Enzygo’s Arboriculturists are experienced in inspecting trees and in writing tree management reports for a number of objectives. These can include the reduction of conflicts between mature trees and buildings, management for site safety and tree works to increase or maintain the ecological value of trees (including veteran trees). We can prepare full tree work specifications to BS 3998:2010 Tree Work Recommendations and help our clients in procuring the works including contract administration and site supervision. We are also able to carry out site appraisals where tree roots may have caused subsidence of buildings or other manmade structures and advise on detailed site and building investigations.

Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Areas

Where trees are legally protected either by Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or by the location of the tree within a Conservation Area, we can advise our clients on the implications this may have on their projects. We can establish the extent of protection, liaise with the Local Planning Authority, prepare Tree Work Applications and assist with any dispute over proposed or existing designations. Where it is agreed that TPO trees are to be removed, we can help preparing a tree replacement scheme (link to Tree Planting Specification)

Woodland Management Planning

We can assist woodland owners to draw up Woodland Management Plans in order to achieve a variety of objectives, which may include commercial woodland use, recreation, ecological enhancement and even educational use. We use both desk top studies and information collected during site visits to establish both the constraints and opportunities in light of the vision for the woodland. Once ideas for the improvement of the woodland have been agreed on with all stakeholders, we are able to detail management and maintenance schedules to achieve these and review this regularly during and after the agreed management period. We are also able to advise on any grants which may be available for woodland creation and management.
